The last time we spoke with Renault-Nissan head Carlos Ghosn, at the Geneva Motor Show, he spoke about the 70,000 all-electric vehicles his company's have sold to happy customers and how these vehicles are just the beginning of the EV era. Speaking at the New York Auto Show a little over a month ago, Ghosn went into detail about how building electric cars around the world will make them cheaper - and thus more prevalent - for just about everyone. He said:

When we started this effort on electric cars, the first challenge for us was to build credibility for the car itself. Because in the minds of many consumers, the electric car was a golf cart. Zero emission, yes, but everything else was wrong. This first challenge is over today. People driving the Leaf today know it's a real car. Acceleration, driving performance, silence - everything - it's a real car. They still complain. So, all the people who bought the Leaf are very happy. But a lot of people are testing the Leaf and not buying it. We asked them, why are you not buying the car?

There were two main answers: high price and worries about charging infrastructure. In the US, Nissan dropped the base price of the 2013 Leaf by $6,400 earlier this year and Ghosn said Nissan will "continue to reduce the price as a function of the cost." This will happen not just because of reduced shipping costs and less reliance on currency fluctuations, but because there are still efficiency gains to be had in the new production locations, Ghosn said. "It's not finished."
Continue reading Carlos Ghosn: it makes sense to focus on electric vehicles, cooperate on fuel cells

Carlos Ghosn: it makes sense to focus on electric vehicles, cooperate on fuel cells originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 10 May 2013 11:52:00 EST. But why turn the disagreement into a fight?

At the New York Auto Show this week, the Nissan booth displayed a sign that promoted the first major DC Fast Charging standard and says, "Nissan is committed to creating an industry standard for charging, and to finding a charging standard that suits all EV owners." Given that there are more than 32,000 Leafs with CHAdeMO on the roads today, the company can't exactly change horses now. Turns out, Nissan doesn't want to change, said Brendan Jones, director of Nissan Leaf marketing and sales strategy for Nissan North America.

Jones told AutoblogGreen, "We are committed to continuing to deploy [CHAdeMO]. We are also committed to making sure there is an open dialogue and communication on this with the other OEMS, with the Combo standard, etc. The dialogue is shifting, in my opinion, to something much more positive. Everyone agrees we have to build the infrastructure. The topography, the unit itself, we can continue to debate."

"The dialogue is shifting, in my opinion, to something much more positive. Everyone agrees we have to build the infrastructure."

"The industry is rallying around, saying, look, we just need to build the infrastructure," he continued. "In-ground is the most expensive, on the top is becoming the least expensive." What that means is that laying cable and deciding where to put future fast chargers is the part that costs a lot of money. When buying in bulk, Nissan's outdoor 50-kW DC Fast Charger can be had for around $15,500 (that $10,000 headline number from a year and a half ago is for the indoor version). While that may seem big compared to a $2,000 Level 2 home charger, it's actually the least expensive unit on the market, Jones said. Others can range from around $25,000 to $40,000.
Continue reading SAE wants Combo fast charging, Nissan remains committed to CHAdeMO

SAE wants Combo fast charging, Nissan remains committed to CHAdeMO originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 19:53:00 EST.
More gears equals less fuel use in Chrysler's trademark Jeep Cherokee, as the US automaker will make a nine-speed automatic transmission standard on its 2014 Cherokee.

The transmission, the world's first nine-speed automatic transmission for passenger vehicles with a front-wheel-drive layout, was developed by ZF and will be assembled, along with the rest of the new Cherokee, at Chrysler's plant in Kokomo, IN. Last year, ZF said that nine speeds is the "natural limit" for transmissions, given the law of diminishing returns.

Chrysler says the new Cherokee gets "up to 31 mpg," which is certainly better than the 19 miles per gallon combined that the six-speed, two-wheel-drive 2013 Cherokee gets, per the EPA.

Earlier Wednesday, Chrysler took the wraps off the 2014 Cherokee at the New York Auto Show, complete with a simulation of a "trip" through Moab in the Trailhawk version. The model will have both front- and all-wheel-driver versions ranging from 184 to 271 horsepower and is based on a platform developed by Chrysler's sister company Alfa Romeo. Check out Chrysler's press release below.
Continue reading Jeep unveils 9-speed transmission for Cherokee

Jeep unveils 9-speed transmission for Cherokee originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 14:02:00 EST.
The automotive journalist judges behind the World Green Car of the Year apparently with the overwhelming majority of AutoblogGreen readers, as they've just named the Tesla Model S their winner. We don't yet know what the official ballots were, but our informal poll had the Tesla beating the other two finalists - the all-electric Renault Zoe and the Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid - with over 82 percent of the vote.

This is just the latest win for the Model S. The all-electric sedan was named "Car of the Year" by both Automobile and Motor Trend in 2012 and even Time Magazine called it of the 25 Best Inventions of the year.

Previous winners include the Mercedes-Benz S250 CDI BlueEfficiency (2012), Chevrolet Volt (2011) Volkswagen BlueMotion (2010) and Honda FCX Clarity (2009).
Tesla Model S wins 2013 World Green Car of the Year originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 09:25:00 EST. "We have found that there are so many factors impacting the fuel economy people get, especially with hybrids across the industry, that we want to be the company that gives drivers the best tools to manage their own personal fuel economy," said Ford head of global marketing James Farley. To that end, Ford is inviting app developers to access Ford's vehicle technology platforms to find ways to help drivers improve their fuel economy, and is offering cash awards of up to $50,000 to those that work.

It is unusual for a car company to open up its engineering architectures and platforms to outsiders for fear of compromising intellectual property. Ford may be the first to open up both its hardware and software platforms to outsiders who want to pitch the company on new solutions to improve fuel economy.
Continue reading Ford offering app developers $50k reward for achieving better fuel economy

Ford offering app developers $50k reward for achieving better fuel economy originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 16:01:00 EST.
During a side session at the New York Auto Show today, José Muñoz, the senior vice president for sales and marketing, US and Canada, for Nissan, revealed that the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle is having a tremendous sales month. The company doesn't yet know the specific number - there are a few selling days left, after all - but it appears that over 1,900 Leafs will be sold this month.

That means that March 2013 marks the new high-water point for the world's best-selling EV. Previously, the best sales month was June 2011, when Nissan sold 1,708 Leafs.

The new record is due mostly to cost savings Nissan has realized by starting to build the Leaf in Smyrna, TN instead of shipping it over from Japan. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn remained completely confident in his electric vehicle strategy, which we will detail a bit later. For now, though, with record Leaf numbers and Tesla delivering 500 Model S vehicles a week, electric vehicles appear to be finding an audience well beyond those early adopters who bought in when the Leaf was released in late 2010 - or the Roadster before that.
Nissan Leaf sales will hit new record in March, around 1,900 units originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 13:30:00 EST.
The fact that the brand-new prototype three-cylinder, 1.5-liter gasoline engine from BMW finds itself in a 1 Series is almost accidental. Heidelinde Holzer, who works on powertrain predevelopment, powertrain functions and powertrain integration, told AutoblogGreen her team simply took the cars that were available. After all, when you're working on engines that are not destined to go into any vehicles in the near future - this has been a four-year project already - it's okay to test them in whatever mule you've got access to. The first production vehicle that will use the three-cylinder is the upcoming i8 plug-in hybrid, which isn't going to arrive until the first half of 2014. BMW didn't allow us to play around in one of those, so we had to make due with our 1 Series prototype test drives yesterday at BMW's Woodcliff Lake, NJ, headquarters.

Under a sky that alternated between bright and threatening-to-rain, two red 1 Series zipped around the BMW campus - we were not allowed to take them on public roads - between technical sessions about the engine, the upcoming four-cylinder 328d diesel and BMW's new suite of apps. According to what we saw, future Bimmers are going to get a lot more efficient and a whole lot more connected.
Continue reading BMW 3-cylinder prototype engine sits pretty in 1 Series, will be better in i8 plug-in hybrid

BMW 3-cylinder prototype engine sits pretty in 1 Series, will be better in i8 plug-in hybrid originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 08:27:00 EST.
Which is best new green car in the world - the all-electric Renault Zoe, the all-electric Tesla Model S or the Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid?

Those are the three finalists for the 2013 World Green Car of the Year award, and the winner will be announced later this week at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. The three finalists were named announced at the recent 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The annual award is limited to production vehicles that either are available to buy, or will be soon, on at least two of the world's continents.

The 2013 Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid already is sold out for this production year, the Tesla S has been controversial lately for a dispute over its range ability, and the Renault Zoe is not available in North America. We wonder how the judges will take all this into account?

The 2012 World Green Car of the Year winner was the Mercedes S 250 CDI clean diesel, which beat out the other finalists, the Ford Focus Electric and the Peugeot 3008.

Jim Kliesch, the Clean Vehicles Program research director for the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), is noticing a change. Instead of hyping marquee "green" cars, auto manufacturers are settling into a groove where they regularly show off packages of conventional fuel-saving methods that will allow them to bring more-efficient vehicles to market. These small changes add up to noticeable results, he said during an interview at the New York Auto Show last week, and that's important, since fuel efficiency is a big part of the ongoing revitalization of the industry.

We've seen fuel efficiency standards drive technology for 30 years, and when the standards stagnated, new fuel efficient technologies were not put on vehicles.

"A number of manufacturers have talked about the wide array of new models that they'll be bringing to the market in the next year," he said, "and it's clear they're recognizing consumers want to get back into showrooms and they want to have products to deliver. A key part of that equation is having fuel efficient vehicles that people want and need when gas is $4 of $5 a gallon. It's all tied together."

"What automakers have realized is that if you package these technologies together and put a better engine with a better transmission with less mass, you can take a decent-sized bite out of the fuel you consume," Kliesch said, citing Mazda's branding of Skyactiv and Ford's EcoBoost moniker as two examples. "What it's doing is it's making consumers realize that, if they want a more fuel-efficient vehicle, they can seek out these other ways to get it. They don't have to buy a hybrid. There are plenty of other ways to get good fuel economy."
Continue reading Fewer flashy debuts, more serious efficiency efforts thanks to new CAFE rules

Fewer flashy debuts, more serious efficiency efforts thanks to new CAFE rules originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 12 Apr 2012 15:44:00 EST.
Nissan last week announced connectivity improvements for some of its models, including the upgraded Altima that is set to debut this summer as well as the Leaf battery-electric vehicle.

The Japanese automaker, which made the announcements at the New York Auto Show, said its NissanConnect system will launch in the new Altima this July. The system will include Google search and Google navigation capabilities as well as access to Pandora Internet radio.

Additionally, the Nissan Leaf will have improvements to its Carwings communications system, including algorithms that will improve accuracy in predicting the battery's driving range. Next year, Nissan will start installing the Intel-developed duel-display entertainment-communications system in its Infiniti vehicles.

The Altima "is our best-selling car in the United States," Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn said. "It's absolutely essential that this car plays an important role as, if not the most sold car in this segment, at least the second-most sold car in this segment."

Ghosn added that Nissan expects to be able to lower the price of the Leaf in the U.S. once the car and batteries start being assembled in Tennessee later this year.

Nissan unveiled the 2013 Altima in New York last week. The car, which Nissan says will get an estimated 38 miles per gallon, will start at $21,500. The fuel-economy gain - the four-cylinder 2012 Altima gets a combined 27 miles per gallon, according to the EPA - stems from improvements to its transmission's gear ratios as well as the fact that the car is about 80 pounds lighter than the previous model.
Continue reading Nissan announces connectivity improvements for Altima, Leaf; should provide better range estimates

Nissan announces connectivity improvements for Altima, Leaf; should provide better range estimates originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 09 Apr 2012 18:05:00 EST.
There were only two marquee plug-in vehicles unveiled at the New York Auto Show this year, the Fisker Atlantic and the Infiniti LE (which stands for Luxury Electric, which the automaker says emphasizes that luxury comes first), and the Infinit's big calling card was that it doesn't need a plug. The Atlantic wasn't even on the show floor because Fisker wants to focus on selling the Karma - of which it brought three - and not make any hints or promises about when the Atlantic might go on sale.

Still, there was plenty of green to be seen, if you consider modest improvements in fuel economy - a stop-star system here, a vehicle that should come with a Mr. Fusion there (surprisingly, not the one that flies) - to fit that description. We do, because we know that fossil fuels aren't going away any time soon and so these are what green cars look like in 2012. With that, take one last look at the vehicles we saw for the first time this past week and wonder what's next.
Continue reading Green car wrap-up from the Big Apple

Green car wrap-up from the Big Apple originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 06 Apr 2012 18:01:00 EST.
The Terrafugia Transition stands out from all the other vehicles on display at the New York Auto Show, not because it's the prettiest, or even the fastest. It is neither. It is, however, the only piece of road-going machinery in the Jacob Javits Center sporting a propeller and a pair of wings. And that's because it flies.

Yes, it looks like the dream of the practical flying car is finally coming true. Ok, maybe it's more of a plane you can drive home from the airfield, but still. If you can pony up $279,000 and don't mind waiting a year while the company fulfills its 100-strong order book obligations, you, too, can commute George Jetson style.

Of course, the horizontally opposed 100-horsepower Rotax 912S engine that spins both the push propeller and the rear wheels won't sound like his cartoon bubble car, but it's tried, tested and true. It also uses the fuel of today - premium unleaded, please - and returns an impressive 35 miles per gallon on the highway, 20 mpg (5 gallons per hour at cruising speed) in the flyway.

The Transition returns those kind of numbers, in part, because of its light weight. Empty, the aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber construction weigh in at a svelte 970 lbs. Its road-going mileage is further enhanced because it's limited to a top speed of 65 miles per hour. Still, it gets bonus points for being the only vehicle we know that lists both airbags and a parachute as standard safety equipment.

Hit the jump for a full video inspection from our buds over at Engadget, along with Terrafugia footage of the production prototype in both driving and flying action, accompanied by the official press release from that event.
Continue reading Terrafugia Transition gets 35 mpg highway, 20 mpg flyway [w/video]

Terrafugia Transition gets 35 mpg highway, 20 mpg flyway [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 05 Apr 2012 18:04:00 EST.
First announced last October, the reborn, all-electric Delorean has made a surprise appearance at the New York Auto Show this year. It's a surprise because not even Delorean Motor Company president Stephen Wynne knew he was going to be here until a few weeks ago, when show organizers called with an invite.

With a prime spot near the EV ride along track - the DMCev is sadly not involved - Wynne said he's been getting good attention, even though said track is in the basement. We asked Wynne what's been going on with the car since last fall's announcement and the short answer is that this is one EV concept that's going into production.

The target date for fans to buy the DMCev is early 2013, but a lot has to happen between now and then. Right now, all the company has is the converted DMC-12 to show off the technology. To create this, the designers had to add 200 pounds of stuff, and the production version is going to be either the same weight as the gas version, or a few pounds less, in order to improve both performance and range. The car is powered by a 32-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack and has a 125 mile per hour top speed with a range of 100 miles. Published specs claim a 0-60 time of 4.9 seconds, but Wynne said the target is now under six seconds. Price for all this fun? $95,000.

DMC will assemble the car in Houston, TX with a lot of help from Louisiana's Epic EV, the company working on the Torq and Amp vehicles (not the Amp conversions). These two companies are testing different motor/inverter combinations for the electric Delorean, and Wynne said they are looking for a "proven product" from a company that has at least "several hundred" units on the road. The current prototype also uses a DC motor, but the production will use AC for better range, performance and regenerative braking ability. The old-school dashboard is also due for an upgrade

Those are the details we could glean in New York today. Can you believe we made it through this entire post without a Back To The Future reference? The DMCev can't do it, though, with a license plate that reads "Gas? Where we're going we don't need gas" and a battery that carries the "Flux Power" nickname. For more, you can watch a video of Translogic going for a ride in the DMCev here.
Continue reading Delorean Electric surprises in New York, will cost $95,000 in 2013

Delorean Electric surprises in New York, will cost $95,000 in 2013 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 05 Apr 2012 14:01:00 EST. Yes, Infiniti has indeed made a habit of teasing the masses with exotic and eco-friendly concepts at some of the world's largest auto shows over the past few years, notably with the Emerg-E and Essence Concepts. But, unlike those rolling showcases, the automaker claims its latest reveal, known rather cryptically as the LE Concept, will hit dealerships within the next two years in nearly unchanged form.

According to Infiniti, the LE Concept boasts a 24kWh lithium-ion battery made up of 192 cells, positioned under the passenger compartment floor. For those keeping track, this sounds like the same battery used in the Nissan Leaf. The 100kw electric motor, however, is upsized for this application. The LE's 134 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque represent increases of 24 horses and 30 lb-ft over its less powerful sibling.

Infiniti is quick to point out that the LE Concept is not a small car. At 186.4 inches, its length is roughly the same as Infiniti's G sedan. Atop the EV platform sits a highly streamlined body, which pays dividends with a .25 coefficient of drag that ought to help the LE reach its estimated 100-mile range (the latter being the same as the Leaf).

Inside, Infiniti uses words and phrases like double-wave and "Hamon" (ripple) design to describe the LE's purposeful cabin. Ahead of the driver sits both analog and digital readouts showing speed, distance remaining and even the location of available EV chargers in the vicinity, all powered by an Intel Atom processor.

There's plenty of technology packed into the LE Concept, including what the automaker calls Infiniti Connection, which includes Infiniti's Personal Assistant 24-hour concierge service, navigation, and POI search. Also on the menu is a wireless charging system in addition to the standard DC 50 kW quick charger.

Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore says the company expects the LE to "be the first home-based wireless charging system if adapted for the production version." Yes, we noticed the 'if,' too. Guess we'll have to wait and see about that bit. In any case, feel free to read all about the LE Concept in the press release below and to check out our high-res image galleries.
Continue reading Infiniti LE Concept will spawn production electric sedan within two years

Infiniti LE Concept will spawn production electric sedan within two years originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 05 Apr 2012 11:35:00 EST.
We'll be able to share full details on the electric LE Concept from Infiniti when the embargo lifts later today, but our ace photographer Drew Phillips happened to be on the automaker's New York Auto Show stand when officials uncovered the shiny showcar while conducting a practice run-through of their presentation.

The four-door LE concept is broadly believed to presage an upscale pure electric production model based on Nissan Leaf mechanicals for the Infiniti marque. Our man on the scene indicates that the LE is a fairly striking bit of work, with a front end that fits in well with the brand (though the chrome-edged pinched grille is a bit much). The hood line incorporates bulges along its edges, presumably for aerodynamic purposes like those on Leaf. Phillips also remarked that the rear three-quarter view looks a bit like the Hyundai Elantra, a similarity we can see but don't imagine Infiniti designers will necessarily appreciate.

We can't talk specs yet, but for pointers, the Leaf's electric powertrain generates 107 horsepower and 208 pound-feet of torque and it features a 100-mile range. Stick with us and we'll have the full skinny around noon.
Premium Leaf: Infiniti LE concept presents itself early originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 05 Apr 2012 09:44:00 EST.

As is tradition, Day Two of the 2012 New York Auto Show kicked off with the annual World Car of the Year awards. Global entries competed for honors in four different categories, and from the initial list of 34 contenders, the final four were selected this morning.

The big winner was the 2012 Volkswagen Up! subcompact, which takes home the honor of World Car of the Year, beating out its other finalists, the BMW 3 Series and Porsche 911. We've had a chance to drive VW's tiny runabout and, while it would be hard for the automaker to justify offering something this small in the United States (right now), we'd gladly welcome its tossable city dynamics and efficiency here on our shores. With a small bump in power, it could certainly show the Fiat 500 who's boss.

But the Up! wasn't the only car praised in New York this morning. The new 991-series Porsche 911 was named World Performance Car of the Year, besting other nominees like the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 and McLaren MP4-12C. Stiff competition, for sure, but you just can't match the 911's razor-sharp precision, not to mention that this new 991 model is easily the best 911 yet.

Moving on to a different sort of performance, the Mercedes-Benz S250 CDI BlueEfficiency took top honors for its eco-performance, securing the World Green Car of the Year award. In this segment, the other two finalists were the Ford Focus Electric and Peugeot 3008 Hybrid greenlings.

Lastly, the WCOY jury selected the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque for the World Car Design of the Year - not really a surprise, seeing as how the baby Range Rover has been praised for its styling ever since the day it launched. Our condolences to the Citroën DS5 and Volkswagen Up! - you guys just aren't pretty enough.

See all of the World Car winners in our attached high-res galleries, and stay tuned for more details about this year's awards later today.

The Ram 1500 will receive a significant refresh for the 2013 model year, and the majority of the changes are indeed more than skin-deep. That's because the 2013 Ram will hit the showroom floor with a host of powertrain upgrades, including features that have never been offered on American pickup trucks until now.

Chrysler promises that the new 3.6 will improve fuel efficiency by "at least 20 percent."

Many of the Ram's new technologies speak to its fuel-saving nature, including an eight-speed automatic transmission for both six- and eight-cylinder models, stop-start, improved aerodynamics, electric power steering, grille shutters and an auto-adjusting air suspension. The air suspension is essentially a version of the setup used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and features an Aero Mode, lowering the ride height by 1.2 inches to help cut through the wind more efficiently. Ram will also offer the Chrysler Group's 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 as the base powerplant, delivering 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. For reference, Ford rates the 2012 F-150 pickup's naturally aspirated 3.7-liter V6 at 302 hp and 278 lb-ft.

Chrysler promises that the new 3.6 will improve fuel efficiency by "at least 20 percent" compared to the old 3.7-liter unit. Another 20 percent added to 20 miles per gallon on the highway and 14 mpg in the city equates to a class-leading 24 mpg highway and 17 mpg city.

Of course, V8 power is available, courtesy of Chrysler's tried-and-true 5.7-liter Hemi, which now delivers 395 hp and 407 lb-ft of torque. That's five more horsepower compared to the 2012 model, and that improvement comes courtesy of the new electronic power steering system. The most impressive part is that the Hemi-equipped model will also boast 20 percent better fuel economy, thanks largely to the fact that the eight-speed automatic is also fitted to this eight-pot mill. Chrysler will announce official fuel economy numbers closer to the Ram's on-sale date.

The Ram 1500 can achieve these substantial efficiency gains because of the aforementioned fuel-sipping technologies, but engineers have also cut considerable weight. The V6 powertrain is an amazing 76 pounds lighter than the outgoing 3.7-liter, and the TorqueFlite eight-speed and Hemi combine for a 30-pound reduction in the 5.7-liter model. Other weight savings come from an aluminum hood (26 pounds), chassis with more high-strength steel (up to 30 pounds), new floor cross-members in the bed (seven pounds), new front bumper (four pounds) and the electronic steering system (four pounds).

Additional improvements include upgraded exterior styling, a richer-looking cabin and a stiffer chassis that promises decreased noise, vibration and harshness. The Ram will also feature improved available infotainment tech, including an 8.4-inch navigation screen and a configurable seven-inch thin-film transistor screen that is standard on Sport, Laramie and Laramie Longhorn models.

The gorgeous Mazda Takeri concept is making its U.S. debut at the New York Auto Show, and you'll want to take another close look at it: it will "strongly influence" the 2014 Mazda6 that we'll see at the Paris Motor Show later this year. The next Mazda6 will also follow the Mazda CX-5 in the company's lineup of SkyActiv vehicles.

In spite of the 2014 model year, the 6 will go on sale during Q1 of 2013 and will feature the SkyActiv 2.0-liter gas engine that shifts through a six-speed auto or six-speed manual. Mazda says it is gunning to post class-leading fuel economy figures.

We will also be looking to see if it spawns a coupe, since the Takeri could make an equally beautiful two-door. If so, that isn't expected to happen for at least a year after the sedan bows, but recent events at Mazda have made such long-distance predictions exceedingly difficult. Follow the jump for a press release with more info on the 2014 Mazda6.
Continue reading 2014 Mazda6 with SkyActiv tech confirmed for Paris Motor Show

2014 Mazda6 with SkyActiv tech confirmed for Paris Motor Show originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 18:31:00 EST.
There is no sugar-coating the fact that the Acura RL has been a dud since Day One. Honda's luxury brand is painfully aware of this fact, especially since next to nobody purchased the pricey sedan. Then again, the RL has suffered the indignity of being outgunned by a lower-priced model from within its own portfolio, so we can see how selling one has been an uphill climb for dealers. But Acura has an all-new luxury flagship waiting in the wings, and it's seen its first light of day as the RLX Concept, which just debuted at the New York Auto Show.

Honda is quick to point out that the sedan will provide large car interior volume in a mid-size package.

Like most other Honda/Acura concepts, the RLX is sure to look much the same in production trim. The concept features a new design direction for the upscale marque, with more understated yet elegant lines that just look more expensive than the outgoing RL. With the exception of the fussy concept car wheels, we think it looks rather crisp, though it is very conservative and has a trunk that reminds us more than a little bit of the BMW 7 Series when viewed in profile. The concept appears to be quite large as well, but Honda is quick to point out that the sedan will provide large car interior volume in a mid-size package.

The RLX concept arrives packing some advanced technology under the hood as well, including an all-new 3.5-liter V6 mated to a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. But the reworked V6 and all-new transmission is just part of the powertrain story. The concept also features an advanced Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system that helps boost overall power to a V8-like 370 horsepower.

The concept features a Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system that boosts power to a V8-like 370 horsepower.

The "hybrid" part of that title includes what Acura is calling a "unique dual electric motor drive unit with a bilateral torque adjustable control system." Basically, it's a through-the-road electric all-wheel-drive setup with torque vectoring on the rear axle. The same Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system first appeared on the NSX concept, and we drove a prototype of the system disguised as a Honda Accord last November. Acura promises fuel economy numbers of at least 30 miles per gallon on the highway and in the city.

The production RLX will also be available sans electric-AWD system, with 310 horsepower coming solely from the 3.5-liter V6. The front-wheel-drive version will feature a plethora of technology that improves handling, including Amplitude Reactive Dampers, a new double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. It will also weigh in "well under 4,000 pounds," which should help in the handling department.

The production Acura RLX should be available in early 2013. Scroll down to read Acura's official press release and click on the image above to view the RLX concept in high resolution while you wait for our live shots from the show floor.
Continue reading Acura RLX Concept looks to kickstart Honda's premium brand from the top [w/video]

Acura RLX Concept looks to kickstart Honda's premium brand from the top [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 17:13:00 EST.
When the Toyota Camry gets overhauled, like it did this year, you know it's not long before its corporate sister, the Lexus ES, gets revisited as well. And Lexus has done exactly that this afternoon at the New York Auto Show, with the new model doing what the ES does best: Surprise no one.

As expected, the biggest news is the announcement of a hybrid ES, a move that should be the final nail in the coffin of the slow-selling HS 250h. This new hybrid is essentially the Camry hybrid in a nicer package, powered by the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder fitted with the ubiquitous Toyota hybrid system. As it does in the hybrid GS, Lexus will offer a sport drive mode, as well as an EV mode. Lexus estimates that the ES hybrid will have 40-mile-per-gallon combined fuel economy, matching that of the Camry Hybrid XLE (a number that presumably will give it best-in-class bragging rights).

The ES gets the new Lexus spindle grille treatment and a 1.8-inch longer wheelbase, but changes to the sheetmetal aren't as dramatic as the upgraded cabin. The instrument panel now resembles the one in the GS, with a horizontal treatment and a big LCD screen, along with the love/hate Lexus Remote Touch Interface controller snuggling next to the gearshift in the center console. New seats boast a leather-alternative NuLuxe covering, although real hide is also available, along with premium semi-aniline leather. Somehow, Lexus has even managed to find an extra four inches of legroom up front.

The ES 350 will still mate Toyota's proven 3.5-liter V6 with a six-speed automatic, driving the front wheels. But Lexus says it's modified the suspension and steering in this generation of ES to improve handling - and it's even cut the curb weight of the 2013 ES by 90 pounds.
