Honda may be looking to take on the Hoveround in the competitive personal mobility segment. The company unveiled its E-Canopy three-wheeled scooter at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. Honda envisions the all-electric trike primarily for personal use, though the large optional trunk may also make the vehicle ideal for small delivery businesses that may need to cover short distances. The large, plexiglass windscreen should help keep the driver fairly dry in light weather, though the lack of passenger seating may be a problem should the E-Canopy ever make it to production.

We can already see roving gangs of overweight Americans whirring their way to the local Golden Arches before prowling the aisles of their favorite box stores on their Honda <strike>Hoveround</strike> E-Canopy.
Honda E-Canopy is mobility minded trike originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 04 Dec 2011 08:04:00 EST.
If Mitsubishi is serious about its electrification efforts, it has to offer more than the pint-sized all-electric i in the States. That's where the Concept PX-MiEV II comes in.

What you're looking at is the plug-in hybrid version of the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander, something Mitsubishi confirms is set to go on sale sometime in 2012.

A traditional 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is mounted up front, but each rear axle has an electric motor that's fed power by a lithium-ion battery pack spanning the floor. Mitsubishi claims the MX-MiEV II can run up to 31 miles on electric power alone, and if you mash the gas the system switches to parallel hybrid mode by engaging the engine. All told, you should be able to make it up to 500 miles on a single tank, but if you're commute is less than 15 miles, you could go gas-free for months.
Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV II is the 2013 Outlander in mild disguise originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 02 Dec 2011 18:50:00 EST.
Suzuki hit the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show with a small flotilla of green-minded vehicles, including the Swift EV Hybrid. According to the company, most Swift buyers travel between 12 and 18 miles per day, so engineers designed this range-extended EV to cover that distance on pure electric power. A small-displacement internal combustion engine remains on hand to take over charging duties should the driver deplete the vehicle's batteries, just like in the Chevrolet Volt. Suzuki says that the design has several advantages over a traditional electric vehicle.

For starters, the system uses a significantly smaller battery than a full EV, which means the Swift EV Hybrid uses fewer resources and costs less. It also takes less time to charge than a full EV as well. While we don't expect to see this doorless wonder on the streets any time soon, Suzuki may apply the range-extender technology to production models in the future.
Suzuki debuts range-extended Swift EV Hybrid originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 02 Dec 2011 07:54:00 EST.
Toyota unveiled a handful of production and concept Aqua models at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. As you may recall, the Aqua will serve as the Prius C here in the United States when it lands at the Detroit Auto Show in early 2012. The Yaris-sized hatchback will come equipped with a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, though Toyota hasn't said what we can expect in terms of total output. We do know that the vehicle's svelte curb weight and smaller engine will likely translate into Prius-besting fuel economy numbers, so buyers can look forward to over 50 mpg in the city.

The brightly-colored Aqua Kiriri Version and Aqua Piriri Version joined the production Aqua under the lights in Tokyo, giving the world a better idea of what the model could offer in terms of dealer modification. The little hatch looks sharp, and the fuel economy figures are enough to make anyone grin.
Toyota Aqua concepts hint to a Prius C of possibilities originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 18:38:00 EST.
If this year's Tokyo Motor Show is going to live up to its reputation for wacky, it's because of the Suzuki Q Concept. Looking like an oversized portable CD player rolling around on two sets of Apple earbuds, the electric Q is nothing if not cute.

It's also different, with seating that's configurable for two adults in tandem fashion, or an adult up front with two kids in the back. Or you can ditch the backseat altogether and use the space for cargo. Suzuki says the Q is part car and part motorcycle, but we think a more apt description of the 98-inch-long oddity would be part moped, part Segway.

With a range of just over six miles, the Q isn't much of a car, but it could make a nice runabout for city-dwellers. Or a stylish way to get down your driveway to get the mail when it's raining for the average American. Read the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Suzuki Q Concept is long on cute, short on range

Suzuki Q Concept is long on cute, short on range originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 17:46:00 EST. Toyota brought out the second iteration of its MR-S/MR2-based GRMN Sports Hybrid Concept, with an all-new look, more carbon fiber and a reworked hybrid powertrain. The standard 2ZZ four-cylinder (or lesser 1ZZ in the States) has been swapped out for a 3.5-liter V6 mounted amidships and outputting 247 horsepower. While that's not much juice from a big V6, the addition of an electric motor powering the front wheels brings overall output up to just under 300 hp, allowing the 3,300-pound roadster to run to 60 mph in the mid-five-second range.

If you're wondering about the name, it's an acronym for "Gazoo Racing tuned by Meister of the Nürburgring," referring to Toyota's ace test driver, the late Hiromu Naruse. Along with the Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition, this was the final vehicle Naruse-san worked on before his untimely demise, and it's one of maybe three vehicles at the show that we'd drive home tomorrow given the chance.
MR2 lives on with Toyota GRMN Sports Hybrid Concept II originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 15:01:00 EST.
BMW let loose the details on its ActiveHybrid 5 two months ago and little's been mentioned of it since. If you had seen the liquid blue sedan tucked anonymously into the BMW stand at the Tokyo Motor Show, you might wonder if it's ever going to engage in a public display of affection. The hybridized 535i gets BMW's much-loved turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and a 55-horsepower electric motor, for a total of 335 hp and a 5.7-second run to 60 miles per hour.

It's coming to the United States early next year, so details like exact fuel economy and pricing - which is to say, how much more you'll have to spend to get more fuel economy than a 535i - should be on the way very soon. In the meantime there's a press release after the jump and a fresh gallery of high-res photos live from Tokyo for you to peruse.
Continue reading BMW ActiveHybrid 5 might be the ultimate modesty machine

BMW ActiveHybrid 5 might be the ultimate modesty machine originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 19:58:00 EST.
Let's get one thing straight: This is not a coupe. Not even close. But ever since BMW kicked off the bastardization of the word 'coupe' with its X6 crossover, automakers seem to think that any vehicle with a sloped roofline can be classified by this word that has always been - and should always be - reserved exclusively for two-door cars. That's a whole different rant, though. In the meantime, we'd like to introduce you to the Volkswagen Cross Coupe concept.

Debuting at the Tokyo Motor Show, the Cross Coupe is the first vehicle to ride on Volkswagen's new modular transverse matrix architecture, and it previews the future of the automaker's crossover range. It may look large, but the Cross Coupe is actually smaller than the current Tiguan, closer in size to that of a Nissan Juke. It certainly isn't bad to look at, even with that big, grinning face. The compact shape is well-proportioned, though it appears that the chrome wheels were ripped right off a loaded Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Cross Coupe is powered by a unique all-wheel-drive hybrid drivetrain, with two electric motors (one for each axle) paired with a turbocharged gasoline engine. Volkswagen estimates that this powerplant will produce around 262 horsepower, but will be able to drive on pure electricity for about 25 miles thanks to a plug and a 9.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. Running to 60 miles per hour will take around seven seconds.

Scroll through our high-res image gallery above to see the Volkswagen Cross (not-so) Coupe Concept live from the Tokyo Motor Show floor.
Continue reading Volkswagen Cross Coupe Concept looks slick, is not a coupe

Volkswagen Cross Coupe Concept looks slick, is not a coupe originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 14:01:00 EST.
Honda has whipped the sheets off of its EV-STER, a rear-wheel drive electric roadster not dissimilar in size and scope to the late, lamented Beat kei car. If you're looking for a successor to Honda's S2000 or a Mazda MX-5 Miata rival, this isn't it - the EV-STER is significantly smaller than those cars, and with a pure electric drivetrain, this showcar is more suited to top-down fun in the city than the open road.

Purely a concept for the moment, the EV-STER offers a 160-kilometer range, a 0-37 mph (60kph) time of 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 99 mph, though Honda isn't offering much in the way of hardware specifications.

Attractive in both general form and detail, we could admittedly do without the yoke-style steering interface employed here and in Honda's other Tokyo Motor Show concepts. Steering wheel aside, we hope Honda finds a way to bring something like the EV-STER to market... and we wouldn't mind if it weren't a EV, either.
Continue reading EV-STER rear-wheel drive electric sports car looks to recapture Honda's sporting spirit

EV-STER rear-wheel drive electric sports car looks to recapture Honda's sporting spirit originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 10:01:00 EST.
Honda is bringing a whole range of transportation solutions to the Tokyo Motor Show, from this plug-in hybrid sedan concept to folding scooters and pod cars. Dubbed AC-X for Advanced Cruiser eXperience, this streamlined sedan draws heavily from the FCX Clarity fuel cell sedan's aesthetics, applying its design language to a plug-in hybrid electric showcar.

Powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder and a pair of electric motors, the four-seat AC-X features a super-slippery .21 cD thanks to active aero bits (front bumper, side skirts and rear diffuser) and transparent full wheel covers that remain stationary when the car is in motion.

Just as interestingly, the AC-X explores autonomous control, with "Automatic Drive Mode Support," which folds the control yoke 'wheel' into the dashboard, reclines the front seat and presents an ottoman for the driver's legs, all while safely delivering its passengers to their destination.

Despite such future-think technologies, the AC-X's powertrain seems remarkably near-term, with a realistic EV-only cruising range of 50 kilometers and a maximum electric-only top speed of 100 kph (62 mph). Check out more in our gallery live from the show floor.
Honda AC-X Concept PHEV is ready to move you originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 08:01:00 EST. With over 20,000 Leafs running around the planet, Nissan is looking to introduce yet another alt-powered vehicle to the world, and judging by its recent work with fuel cells, a hydrogen-powered vehicle could be here in four year's time.

Today in Japan, Nissan showed off its next-generation fuel cell stack, the one that the automaker has claimed has the world's best power density for its size. Compared to the 2005 model (above, left), the new fuel cell (above, right) has 2.5-times more storage capacity while being both smaller and lighter than its predecessor. Weight is down from 265 pounds to just under 90 pounds and output is up to 2.5kW per liter.

This third-generation fuel cell stack makes uses of an improved Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA), which combined with single-row lamination, has reduced the size by over half. More importantly, the amount of platinum bits inside has been decreased, which means this new cell is about one-sixth the cost of the last generation design. But - and there's always a "but" when it comes fuel cells - the cost of production is around $50,000. However, that price is set to come down and one engineer confided in us that he'd like to half the size and components yet again, while providing 1.25-times more storage. Considering Nissan's EV push with the Leaf, we could see the automaker's first fuel cell vehicle on the market in 2015. Earlier reports said Nissan wanted to launch its fuel cell car at a cost of less than ten million yen ($128,000 U.S. at today's exchange rate). In its recent "mid-term environmental plan," Nissan said it plans to sell 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles by 2016 (some coming from Alliance partner Renault). That number includes all-electric vehicles as well as an "all-new fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) together with strategic partner, Daimler," Nissan said in a press release last month. Now about that infrastructure...
Nissan fuel cell vehicle on track for 2015 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 29 Nov 2011 15:59:00 EST.
It was just a few months ago that Nissan announced it had sold over 10,000 all-electric Leaf electric cars around the world. Speaking before the start of the Tokyo Motor Show today, company officials confirmed to Autoblog that the automaker has sold over 20,000 Leafs since the electric car went on sale in December of 2010.

Of that total, over 60 percent of the roughly 9,000 Leafs sold in the U.S. so far this year (we'll get specific numbers later this week) have found homes in California. Furthermore, Nissan is on track to eclipse 10,000 Leafs sold in the U.S. by the end of the year - perfectly in line with what the automaker expected.
Nissan sells 20,000 Leafs worldwide, 10,000 in U.S. by end of the year originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 29 Nov 2011 07:48:00 EST. The quirkiness - i.e., stuff like this - continues. As a preview for the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, Daihatsu has released images of the D-X, something called the Pico (above) and the FC Sho Case. As is totally expected, these concepts are heavy on the green, light on the possibility that they will eventually make it to production.

Still, let's humor Daihatsu and imagine that we may be able to one day buy these vehicles. What would that be like? Well, in the case of the door-less and window-less tandem two-seat Pico, it's a compact, clean little half car. The Pico is supposed to represent, "a new category of vehicle positioned between light automobiles and motorized bicycles," Daihatsu says. Target audience? "The aging population, regional locations and delivery businesses."

The D-X (pronounced "d cross") is a sporty little two-seater powered by a conventional engine, but a frugal direct-injection two-cylinder one. More interesting is the FC ShoCase, which is powered by "liquid fuel cells that contain no precious metals" that would be cheaper to produce than traditional fuel cells that rely on platinum and other expensive materials. If the van were ever to be manufactured. Which it won't. The FC ShoCase is still cool, though, even if it doesn't have any seats as far as we can tell.
Continue reading Daihatsu bringing electric, fuel cell and efficient gas car to Tokyo Motor Show

Daihatsu bringing electric, fuel cell and efficient gas car to Tokyo Motor Show originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 11 Nov 2011 19:34:00 EST.
With the Tokyo Motor Show coming up around the bend, Japan's automakers are preparing to roll out their best. And Mitsubishi isn't about to sit idly by.

The Tri-Diamond automaker has two major world debuts planned for its home-market expo: one production vehicle and one concept. The former sees the return of the Mirage nameplate - most prominently used in the 1980s - in place of the Colt with a new entry-level model. The basic five-door hatchback packs an economical 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine with stop/start and a continuously variable transmission that will hit the Thai market first when it launches in March 2012.

Joining the new Mirage on the Mitsubishi stage will be the Concept PX-MiEV II, a plug-in hybrid crossover update to 2009's PX-MiEV that joins the i-MiEV electric car and the Minicab-MiEV light-duty commercial vehicle in the company's expanding portfolio of electric vehicles. A 2.0-liter four-banger is coupled to a pair of 60-kilowatt electric motors to drive all four wheels through the Lancer Evo's S-AWC traction system to deliver comparable power to a 3.0-liter V6 while offering improved emissions and fuel consumption figures.

In addition to the usual battery-only and internal combustion generator modes, the PX-MiEV II also enables outdoorsy types to run portable appliances off the vehicle's battery packs. There's plenty more to digest in the press release, so hit the jump to check it out, and scope out both the Mirage and the Concept PX-MiEV II in the pair of galleries for a closer look.
Continue reading Mitsubishi rolls out new Mirage alongside Concept PX-MiEV II for Tokyo

Mitsubishi rolls out new Mirage alongside Concept PX-MiEV II for Tokyo originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 10 Nov 2011 14:33:00 EST. The car side of the line will offer visitors the chance to get cozy with a new plug-in hybrid concept as well as an EV. The ACX offers plug-in enthusiasts a vehicle that can function equally as well in urban environs or on the open highway thanks to a two-mode drive system with an engine drive mode for a sportier experience and an automatic drive mode for everything else.

Meanwhile, Honda says that the Small Sport EV Concept "maximizes the fun of driving while achieving excellent environmental performance." Details are markedly absent other than that brief description, so we're hoping Honda will shed more light on the model once it debuts in Tokyo.

The company is also planning to pull the sheets off of a new electric motorcycle based on a 250cc chassis. The RC-E is meant to show off the kind of riding enjoyment that can come from an all-electric drivetrain on two wheels. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Honda previews Small Sports EV and AC-X plug-in concepts for Tokyo

Honda previews Small Sports EV and AC-X plug-in concepts for Tokyo originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 10 Nov 2011 13:14:00 EST. For their home turf show, Japanese automakers often bring out the best and quirkiest. To cite just a few examples, how about the three different Nissan Pivo concepts, the Honda EV-N and the Nissan Land Glider. Suzuki continues the trend this year with a full slate of world premieres of unusual designs wrapped around some eco-friendly powertrains.

The theme seems to be that small is good, and the "big" star is the Regina (above), Suzuki's "vision of a next-generation global compact car" that gets 75 miles per gallon (U.S.) on the JC08 test cycle. The usual efficiency suspects - lightweighting and improved aerodynamics - help out here. The Regina weighs just 1,609 pounds (730 kg) and emits just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

Then we have the Q-concept, because apparently having one funky Japanese car defined by a single letter (the Mitsubishi i) isn't enough. The Q is the bright orange My First Discman thing you see above left, and it's a small city vehicle that's only 2.5 meters long and seats two in tandem style. The interior arrangement can be adapted to fit more kids - or delivery goods - in the back. Suzuki doesn't specify, but we assume it's powered by electricity since there is no tailpipe and the automaker says the car (?) is "ideal for everyday journeys within a radius of about 10km."

The most normal-looking vehicle that Suzuki will display at Tokyo Big Sight is the Swift EV Hybrid. A plug-in electric with an "engine-driven generator," the Swift EV Hybrid (also called the Swift Range Extender) can easily go between 20 and 30 kilometers (12 and 18 miles), at least, on battery power and then go further using liquid fuel. Exact details on the battery size and all-electric range will have to wait until the show starts in Japan at the end of the month. In 2009, Suzuki showed off the Swift Plug-In Hybrid.

Suzuki will also display a new Swift Sport and a flotilla of two-wheelers, including some powered by fuel cells and batteries. Read more about them after the jump.
Continue reading Suzuki gets small and funky for Tokyo with Regina compact, Q-Concept, Swift EV Hybrid

Suzuki gets small and funky for Tokyo with Regina compact, Q-Concept, Swift EV Hybrid originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 09 Nov 2011 15:05:00 EST.
Sometimes, even concept cars evolve. Take the Nissan Pivo, an ungainly, all-electric bubble on wheels that first appeared in 2005 at the Tokyo Motor Show. The first version was pretty round, but the Pivo 2 somehow managed to add extra curves around the wheels. For the Pivo 3, unveiled today in advance of this year's Tokyo show, Nissan is keeping some of the quirkiness of the first two Pivos but has scrapped most of the supple round curves of the original two models. Instead, the new Pivo gets some artistic angles to go with its city functionality. Whether this is an improvement or not is in the eye of the beholder.

The changes don't mean that the Pivo is ready for sale quite yet, but Nissan does say that the third-gen Pivo is "what Nissan envisions to be a more 'realistic' EV of the near future." Aside from the zero-emission powertrain (note the "e" logo, as also seen on the Leaf) and in-wheel motors, what's notable about the Pivo 3 is that has got a lot of automated parking capability. In "specially-equipped parking lots," you can even let the car park and recharge itself using "Automated Valet Parking." Even better, you can have the Pivo 3 come to you using your smartphone and the car's autonomous driving skills. Bruce Wayne's got nothing on Pivo. When you are driving, the center-located driver's seat and ultra-tight (two-meter) turning radius.

As you can see in the video after the jump, Nissan is considering putting the Pivo - or something like the Pivo - into production. Francois Bancon, Nissan's deputy division general manager of product strategy and product planning division, said in a statement that nothing has been decided, but:

We are now considering the next step of the EV after LEAF and Infiniti EV and an LCV EV. We are going to have many ways to propose to the market what seems radically different, it must be an EV signature [model], if you will.

So, while PIVO 3 is one of the candidates, this is not the only one. If you remember, we made years ago, a kind of compact sports EV. We have a lot of investigation into what kind of category we should go - what kind of body type, what kind of story we are going to tell to the people with this car. So I would say, PIVO 3 at this stage is one of the candidates. If we do this, we should do this after the first wave of product, LEAF, NV200 EV and the Infiniti EV. So let's say, we talk about something in 2016 or 2017 or about then.

Would you buy one?
Continue reading Nissan shows off Pivo3's new angles, considering quirky EV for production

Nissan shows off Pivo3's new angles, considering quirky EV for production originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 19:53:00 EST.
Hot on the heels of the LA Auto Show (full coverage days coming up next week), the Tokyo Motor Show will shift the auto industry media's focus over to the land of companies that have taken quite a hit this year (see: Earthquake, Japan and Flooding, Thailand). The troubles have rippled through the industry, but that doesn't mean that we can't look forward to better times. To that end, meet the latest green vehicle idea from Fuji Heavy Industries: the Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept car.

An update of sorts to 2009's Hybrid Tourer Concept, the Advanced Tourer Concept uses a downsized 1.6-liter direct fuel injection turbo engine and a lithium-ion battery feeding energy to all four wheels through a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission. (That's how we read the line "Subaru's original hybrid system has been developed to harmonize with the Symmetrical AWD technology," anyway.) Two years ago, Subaru's concept used a 2.0-liter turbo boxer mill.

Subaru has said it will go hybrid with its own technology (and not Toyota's) in 2013, but there was no official word on exactly when or how (in what model) the Advanced Tourer Concept might hit showrooms, but those of you waiting for an AWD Subie hybrid now have another concept to lust over. Like it?
Continue reading Subaru offers a few more details of Advanced Tourer Concept hybrid

Subaru offers a few more details of Advanced Tourer Concept hybrid originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 08:02:00 EST.
The SkyActiv plan is moving along as expected. To wit: the next little glimmer of drivetrain electrification that we will see when Mazda debuts its next-generation mid-size Takeri concept at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show in late November. The car's Kodo design language could be a preview of the next-gen Mazda6, but it's what's under the new sheetmetal that is more interesting.

The Takeri showcases the Japanese automaker's SkyActiv-D clean diesel technology and features i-Stop, Mazda's award-winning stop-start system. In addition, Takeri sports Mazda's next-gen regenerative braking system, which converts kinetic energy to electricity during deceleration. The system works by storing captured energy in capacitors and then using it to power the vehicle's electric equipment. Mazda claims this system reduces engine load, thereby decreasing fuel consumption. Mazda has been clear that i-Stop doesn't do the car any favors on the EPA test in the U.S., and we'll likely have to wait until 2016 to see the technology here.

The Takeri's regenerative braking system is Step Two of Mazda's Building Block Strategy - Step One is i-Stop and Step Three is electric-drive technology. The Takeri concept will hit the stage on November 30.
You've seen the Toyota GRMN iQ Racing Concept (lucky you!), and now it's time to divert your attention towards the rest of the Japanese automaker's wares being shown off at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

First up is the Toyota Prius G Sports Concept (pictured), which features the kind of gaping maw only the Mama Cylon could love. Rounding out Toyota's offerings is the TRD Auris GT Concept, which we think actually looks kinda nifty with its subdued body kit and blindingly bright yellow paint.

Lexus wasn't left out of the proceedings either, and its machines are arguably more interesting than its mothership's. There's the F-Sport CT 200h (a future production model) taking center stage with its unique alloy wheels, body kit and Recaro seats, which is joined by the IS F Club Circuit Sports Racer and a set of Club Performance Accessories for the IS F that include front and rear spoilers and a carbon fiber hood.

Last but certainly not least is the Gazoo Racing Lexus LFA supercar that raced at last year's Nürburgring 24 Hours race. See both sets of vehicular craziness in our high-res image galleries below, then check out all the details in the press releases after the break.
